Carnuntum
Lower Austria’s southernmost wine region delights visitors with its variety and traditions as well as its nearly urban flair. It is no wonder: the old imperial capital of Vienna is just a stone’s throw (or a few minutes’ drive) away!
The Carnuntum winegrowing region extends from the east edge of Vienna to the Slovak border. Heavy rocky soils comprising clay and loess, sand and gravel offer ideal conditions for reds.
Leading the way are the two domestic reds Blauer Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, followed by international newcomers like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. But whites such as Grüner Veltliner, Burgunder varieties and traditional cuvees (called “Gemischter Satz” in eastern Austria) are also known for their structure and full body. Typical regional reds such as Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent in particular bear the designation “Rubin Carnuntum” and the Pagan’s Gate in Carnuntum as a symbol. They are strengthening the regional identity under the proud guidance of top local vintners.
The revitalized Marchfeld castles, Carnuntum Archeology Park and Danube Wetlands National Park are nearby and serve as the cultural landmarks of the region. Wine towns such as Göttlesbrunn, Höflein or Prellenkirchen are known for their many cozy buschenschank wine taverns and have always been an attraction for excursionists, especially from Vienna, the nearby Austrian capital.
